Is Benefit Cruelty Free?

Benefit Cosmetics is one of those brands that everyone seems to think is cruelty free. I did some research to find out, Is Benefit Cruelty Free?

Is Benefit Cruelty Free?

In order to qualify as cruelty-free, a product cannot “allow, conduct, commission, or pay for tests on animals for its ingredients, formulations, or finished products anywhere in the world.”

Does Benefit Cosmetics do animal testing?

Animal testing statement from the Benefit Cosmetics website:

Our products are made in Europe and for imported cosmetics, the Chinese health authorities order some test on animals: they require companies to make their products available to be tested in state-certified laboratories for registration purposes only, as it is currently their only recognized method to demonstrate product safety. We are hopeful that alternative testing methods will be adopted worldwide and we will see an end to animal testing.

In other words Benefit doesn’t test on animals itself; instead, its products are imported into countries like China that perform animal testing independently of the company. It is disingenuous at best for a company to say it doesn’t test on animals knowing a country to which it markets its products will.

Other makeup brands confirm they are cruelty free, why doesn’t Benefit?

Unfortunately, they are NOT a cruelty-free company. The “benefit” is apparently not for animals tested on for Benefit’s benefit!! Their products are also sold in mainland China, where animal testing is required. Benefit also currently sells its products in Sephora stores across China and shows no intention of pulling out of China.

Bye-bye Benefit brow, POREfessional, They’re Real Mascara, Hoola bronzer  and Boi-ing!

If you like Benefit because of their cute packaging, you will LOVE these cruelty-free brand alternatives.
