How to clean makeup brushes the easy, quick, hassle-free way
This is my super easy method for clean makeup brushes. No scrubbing required.
Cleaning makeup brushes is crucial for skin health. Facial oils and bacteria accumulate and can cause blemishes or rashes on the face.
Dirty brushes can breed bacteria the longer they are left dirty. They also can contribute to hard pan ( a hard film) on pressed cosmetics which makes them harder to pick up product over time. Cleaning your makeup brushes is one of those things you know you should do, but avoid doing because you feel like it’s a lot of work so I’m here to help! Since it’s not a thing people love to do, I wanted way to clean brushes so I wouldn’t keep avoiding cleaning them. So I developed this method. Brushes can be delicate and don’t take kindly to being ruffled up.
How often should you clean your makeup brushes?
Ideally, your makeup brushes should be cleaned every time you use them, but that can be a challenge.
Makeup brush cleaning instructions:
I often clean my makeup brushes in groups so I don’t have to do it one at time. I put my brushes in a glass with warm water with two to four drops of liquid cruelty free sulfate free soap or cruelty free shampoo, being careful not to fill over the brushes metal or plastic ferrule (the area that holds the fibers together).
I submerge the brush area only. You don’t want to undo the glue that holds the brush together because if water gets into the ferrule area —where the bristles are glued in—it will loosen over time and the brush will start to shed.
Next up, leave brushes to soak for 10 minutes. I set a timer on my phone. Then swirl and swish brushes back and forth till water becomes cloudy. Then dump dirty water and refill glass container with clean water up to ferrule line again. Again swirl and swish brushes back and forth until water is clear.
Then shake brushes to fling out the extra moisture over the sink. Lay flat to dry. Never put wet brushes vertically back into their storage container. You don’t want water draining into the ferrule.
