What is Slugging Skincare? TikTok Skin Care Hack
Should you be slugging your skin? What is Slugging Skincare? If you’re thinking its one of those ideas like beauty is pain, you would be wrong. And don’t worry, this trend doesn’t use any real slugs even though the name slugging does comes from the idea of a thick gooey slug slime thickness in a skin care topical product.
What is Slugging Skincare? Is this skincare trend called slugging for you?
“Slugging” is the trendy word for applying a thick substance like Vaseline or Aquaphor (NOT CRUELTY-FREE ) to your skin in a thick layer, then sleeping in it after you apply other lighter skincare..
What does slugging skin mean?
No actual physical slugging is used. It consists of people with dry skin slathering petroleum jelly (AKA Vaseline) all over their faces and then heading to sleep. In the morning, people (allegedly) wake up with glowing, ultra-hydrated skin.
It would be the last step in your nighttime routine, locking in any kinds of serums, toners, or oils that you put on prior to a heavy occlusive moisture block. Colder months are the times when skin loses the most moisture. Slugging will be more effective in the winter months.
First of all Vaseline, Aquaphor and Cerave are NOT CRUELTY-FREE. I do not recommend these at all. There are healthier and cleaner alternatives. See below.
Petroleum jelly consists of oils and waxes that act as a barrier on the skin, trapping moisture underneath. Petrolatum jelly is thick, sticky, and can be uncomfortable as well as being tested on animals. It also has a good chance of leaving hard to remove greasy stains on your pillowcases.
Why would you need need skincare slugging?
Dry skin shows enhanced transepidermal water loss and reduced water-binding capacity. People may also have decreased ceramide levels in their skin, resulting in reduced water-binding capacity, higher transepidermal water loss, and decreased water content. The point of “slugging is to seal in less heavy ingredients.
Do I need to use Vaseline for slugging?
NO! Any Occlusive barrier moisturizer or oil will work.
What Does Occlusive Moisturizer Mean?
An occlusive ingredient provides a barrier on top of the skin to prevent the upper layer of the skins water loss.
What does slugging do for your skin?
- Moisturized, glowy skin
- Younger-looking skin
- Repaired skin barrier
- Locking in other products

According to Dr. Debra Jaliman, board-certified New York dermatologist a “Slugging before you go to sleep is fine if you have very dry skin, but not a good idea for acne-prone skin, Slugging can potentially trap oils and clog the skin’s pores and especially irritate acne-prone skin, contributing to breakouts.”
“People who are acne-prone definitely could experience increased pore-clogging with this practice. Instead of the oil and dead skin cells sloughing from the surface, they are trapped under that occlusive barrier,” Dr. Samolitis
