Ferulic acid occurs primarily in seeds and leaves. Ferulic acid (FA) is a phytochemical commonly found in fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes, sweet corn and rice bran.Ferulic acids not only contribute to cell wall assembly, they promote tissue cohesion, restricting cell expansion, but also control the mechanical properties of mature tissues. UV absorption by ferulic acid organizes stable formation and makes potent its ability to terminate free radical chain reactions. Its incorporation into a topical solution of 15% l-ascorbic acid and 1% alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) improved chemical stability of the vitamins (C+E) and doubled photoprotection of skin from 4-fold to approximately 8-fold as measured by both erythema (redness) and sunburn cell formation. The addition of ferulic acid provided stability of more than 90% for L-ascorbic acid and 100% for α-tocopherol (vitamin E) (Zielinski and Pinnell, 2004).
