UVA is out all day all year and causes wrinkles and age spots, so daily use of a broad spectrum sunscreen is the best antiaging skin care step a person can add to their daily beauty routine.
Some people have concerns about certain ingredients in sunscreens
Attention has focused most on the ingredient oxybenzone and whether it is a hormone disruptor. One study showed uterine growth in rats. But if you look at that study, they fed the rats a huge amount of this chemical over the course of four days. To duplicate that amount in humans would take applying sunscreen all over the entire body every day for 70 years. It was not an accurate model for what a human would be exposed to.
Out of of caution, you can use a zinc- or titanium-based sunscreen.Non-Nano mineral Zinc Oxide: helps to protect skin from UVA/UVB sun rays.
What do I need to know about sunscreen ingredients?
Sunscreens contain filters that reflect or absorb UV rays. There are two main types of filters:
- Organic. Organic filters absorb UV radiation and convert it to a small amount of heat. Examples include cinnamates, salicylates and benzophenones.
- Inorganic. Inorganic filters reflect and scatter UV radiation. Examples include titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. Inorganic sunscreens are typically less irritating to skin.
Other claims about sunscreen ingredients have been floating around on the internet but are not backed up by hard science. For example, you may have read that sunscreen containing vitamin A, or retinyl palmitate, can cause skin cancer, but there’s no data to support that.
Experts recommend using a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Sunscreens with SPFs greater than 50 provide only a small increase in UV protection.
The best sunscreen in the one your willing to wear with regularity. The best sunscreen is one that you’ll use generously and according to label directions. UVA is out all day all year and causes wrinkles and age spots, so daily use of a broad spectrum sunscreen is the best antiaging skin care step a person can add to their daily beauty routine. For extensive sun exposure I also recommend using physical sun protection with clothing, hat etc.
If you’re using a spray, apply until an even sheen appears on the skin. Remember that sunscreen needs to be reapplied every two hours, or more frequently after swimming, heavy perspiration, or toweling off. Also remember, no matter how much sunscreen you apply, the SPF should be 15 or higher for adequate protection – and ideally 30 or higher for extended time spent outdoors.
