Online subscription beauty retailer Birchbox may be looking to sell itself.
The company has been discussing a potential sale with several retailers, including Walmart, reported Recode. If the discounter were to acquire Birchbox, it would be the chain’s fifth e-commerce acquisition since last August.
I know Birchbox has never claimed to be cruelty free but it’s offerings have become better as time went on.
If Walmart acquires Birchbox I foresee the loss of the amount of cruelty items in boxes. I say this because Walmart’s own boxes rarely have cruelty free items included. I’m wondering if it will be more of a Procter & Gamble type box (what they offer currently) with fewer high end cruelty free offerings. That would cheapen the value of the box since P&G offers cheap cruelty offerings to start with.
Birchbox’s venture debt is coming due in early 2018.
